The slithery side of the pet trade
Snakes. Why does it have to be snakes?
Because despite the common aversion people have to them, snakes are fascinating animals. As are other reptiles and amphibians.
Keeping any reptile or amphibian as a pet introduces some challenges. They are cold blooded, so you need to carefully control the temperature of their habitat. They have specific dietary needs. Some are hesitant to drink from water bowls, so keeping them hydrated can be difficult.
And then there’s the negative reaction you get when you tell someone you own a snake, a frog, or some other such animal.
But reptiles and amphibians can be amazingly beautiful and interesting to own. They are far lower maintenance than dogs, cats, birds, or other more “traditional” pets. For the right person, they can be a great animal to keep.
